HomeSkincare guide

build the routine, one step at a time.

Korean skincare is built in layers, in a set order, from the lightest step to the richest. Each step readies the skin for the one after it, so every product does more than it would on its own.

Here's why the order works. Go from thinnest to thickest: watery textures first, creams after. Start with a cleanser, then toner and essence, then serum, then moisturizer. At night, add an oil cleanser before your cleanser. In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
Why the order works. Thinnest to thickest, watery textures first and creams after: cleanser, toner and essence, serum, then moisturizer. In the morning, sunscreen goes on last; at night, an oil cleanser comes first.

Before your first step

Before step 1 of 5: patch test.

If you're trying something new, a quick patch test is a good idea. Dab a little behind your ear, or on the inside of your arm. Leave it for a day. If your skin stays calm, go ahead and enjoy it.

If you're trying something new, a quick patch test is a good idea.

How

  1. Dab a little behind your ear, or on the inside of your arm.
  2. Leave it for a day.
  3. If your skin stays calm, go ahead and enjoy it.

When it matters most. A new product, especially an exfoliant or a treatment.

Morning and night

Step 1 of 5: cleanse.

Here's the everyday cleanse. Wet your face, then work the cleanser into a soft lather in your hands. Massage it in for about thirty seconds, then rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Use it on its own in the morning, and after your oil cleanser at night.

It lifts the day off your skin, sweat, oil and grime included, so the layers after it land on skin rather than on a film.

Skip it, and everything you apply next sits on top of what you meant to wash away.

How to apply

  1. Wet your face, lather a small amount in your hands first.
  2. Massage for about thirty seconds with light fingertips, no scrubbing.
  3. Rinse until the skin feels clean but not tight, then pat dry.

When. Morning and evening

A tip. Lukewarm water, never hot. Heat opens nothing and strips plenty.

The common mistakeChoosing a cleanser by how much it foams. Squeaky-clean is the barrier telling you it lost too much.

Step 2 of 5: prep.

Toner starts your layers, after cleansing. Pour a little into your palms, or sweep it on with a cotton pad. Then press in what's left, until it sinks in.

It gives skin a first drink of hydration after cleansing and leaves it damp, ready for the layers that follow.

Skip it, and your serum goes onto skin that still feels tight from cleansing.

How to apply

  1. Pour a coin-sized amount into your palms. A cotton pad works too, but your hands waste less.
  2. Press what is left into damp skin with flat hands, forehead to jaw.
  3. Move to the next step while the skin is still slightly wet.

When. Morning and evening

A tip. Korean toners hydrate rather than strip. If yours stings or smells of alcohol, it is a different product.

The common mistakeWaiting for it to dry. Damp skin is the whole point; the next layer needs it.

Step 3 of 5: treat.

Serums and ampoules go on after essence. Put a few drops on your fingertips, dot them over your face, then smooth and pat them in. Let each one sink in before the next step.

This is where your routine becomes yours: one concentrated step for the thing you care about most.

Skip it, and your routine cleans and hydrates, but nothing in it is chosen for what you care about most.

How to apply

  1. Two to four drops, warmed between the fingertips.
  2. Press onto the areas that need it first, then the rest of the face.
  3. Let it settle before the moisturizer seals it.

When. Morning and evening

A tip. One active per session. Niacinamide plays with almost anything; strong vitamin C and retinoids prefer their own evenings.

The common mistakeLayering three actives at once and blaming the last one for the redness.

Morning and night

Step 4 of 5: moisturize.

Moisturizer seals in every layer. Warm a little between your fingertips, then dot it on your forehead, cheeks and chin. Smooth it outwards, and upwards. It goes on after serum at night, and before sunscreen in the morning.

It locks in the hydration you just layered and keeps skin soft and comfortable. It is the lid on the jar.

Skip it, and the hydration you just layered has nothing holding it in, and skin can soon feel tight again.

How to apply

  1. A coin-sized amount, warmed in the palms.
  2. Press over the face and down the neck.
  3. In the morning, wait a minute before SPF.

When. Morning and evening

A tip. Oily skin still needs this step; a thin layer keeps the barrier without the shine.

The common mistakeSkipping it on humid days. Humidity in the air is not water in the skin.

Every morning

Step 5 of 5: protect.

Sunscreen always finishes your morning skincare, before makeup. Be generous, and cover your face, your neck, and your ears, evenly. Then reapply through the day whenever you're outdoors.

It shields your skin from the day's UV, sun or cloud. If you keep only one step, keep this one.

Skip it, and your skin meets the day's UV with nothing on it.

How to apply

  1. Two finger-lengths for face and neck, the last skincare step.
  2. Fifteen minutes before you go out.
  3. Reapply every two hours outdoors, or after sweating.

When. Every morning, reapplied every 2 hours outdoors

A tip. Korean sunscreens are the ones people actually wear because they feel like skincare. Pick the finish you will apply daily.

The common mistakeA pea-sized amount. Under-application is the most common reason SPF 50 performs like SPF 15.

good to know.

How long should I wait between layers?

In most cases, 30–60 seconds is enough, just until the product feels slightly tacky rather than wet. No need to time every layer, focus on gentle patting for better absorption.

How do I layer active ingredients like AHA, BHA, vitamin C, or retinol?

Use only one strong active per session to reduce irritation. Exfoliants have their own step before toner. Apply an active serum after toner and essence, then follow with moisturizer. Introduce actives two or three nights a week and increase slowly.

Essence vs. serum vs. ampoule: what’s the difference?

Essence: light hydration booster.

Serum: concentrated treatment (brightening, anti-aging, etc.).

Ampoule: an even higher dose, usually for short-term skin goals. Texture thickens in that order.

Can beginners start with fewer products?

Absolutely. Begin with four essentials: oil cleanser, water cleanser, hydrating toner, and moisturizer, plus SPF in the morning. Add new steps one at a time so you can track results.
