- Absorbs excess oil
- Gives the formula its color
- What it does
- Used in clay masks, cleansing foams and pore packs to draw out excess oil and leave skin matte and clearer-looking.
- How often
- Usually weekly or a few times a week in masks and pore packs, while cleansers and moisturizers can be daily and cleansing balms are for evenings. Makeup is worn when wanted; the retinol set starts its retinoids gradually on separate evenings and finishes morning care with sunscreen.
Pairs with
Ingredients that sit well beside kaolin in a routine.
Use apart
What we recommend keeping out of the same session as kaolin, and why.
AHAAvoid together
A kaolin mask soaks up oil, and an AHA the same day can leave skin tight and dry. Use them on different days.
BHAAvoid together
A kaolin mask and BHA both draw oil out of pores, so used together they can leave skin feeling stripped. Give each its own day.
RetinolAvoid together
A kaolin mask leaves skin a little drier, and retinol that night makes it drier still. Keep retinol for the nights you skip the mask.
