Exfoliation and texture
AHA
AHAs, the fruit acids that exfoliate the surface for a smoother, brighter look.
- Draws in moisture
- Conditions skin
- What it is
- Alpha hydroxy acids, often called fruit acids: water-soluble exfoliants listed on labels as glycolic, lactic, mandelic or tartaric acid.
- What it does
- Used in toners, pads, cleansers and peels to loosen the dull surface layer for smoother texture and a brighter look; lactic and mandelic acid are the milder choices.
- How often
- Frequency varies with the formula, from daily washes to less frequent exfoliating treatments; retinoids, masks, sun care, lip products, hair care and makeup have separate timings.
AHAs at exfoliating strength are commonly avoided during pregnancy, so ask your doctor or midwife before using a product with one. This isn't medical advice.
Pairs with
Ingredients that sit well beside AHA in a routine.
Use apart
What we recommend keeping out of the same session as AHA, and why.
RetinolAlternate nights
An AHA and retinol can each leave skin feeling sensitive, and layered in the same evening they can leave it red and irritated. Use them on different nights.
BHAAvoid together
Two exfoliating acids in one routine is more than most skin needs. Use them in different routines, unless a single product is made with both.
KaolinAvoid together
A clay mask already soaks up oil, and an AHA on top can leave skin tight and dry. Keep them to different days.
