Sleeping Masks

about Sleeping Masks.

A sleeping mask is the last step of a night routine, and it works by staying put: a light layer over everything underneath, so less water leaves the skin overnight. Textures are gel or gel cream rather than balm, which is why they feel weightless and rinse off easily in the morning.

They are made for dryness, dehydration and skin that looks dull or creased first thing, and they are the usual answer to a long flight, a heated bedroom or a run of cold weather.

LANEIGE is the name that made the format familiar outside Korea, and COSRX, ROUNDLAB, PURITO and Isntree all make their own. Keep one for the nights your skin asks for it rather than using it out of habit.

questions, answered.

Do I use a sleeping mask instead of night cream?

In place of it, on the nights you use one. It is the last layer, going over your serum and any treatment, and it stays on until you cleanse in the morning. Two or three nights a week is the usual pattern, though dry skin in winter can take more. On other nights, your moisturizer as normal.

Will a sleeping mask transfer onto my pillow?

The gel and gel cream textures here settle within a few minutes and should not. Use a thin layer rather than a thick one, give it five minutes before you lie down, and if it still feels wet you have used too much. Balm textures are the ones that move.

Can oily skin use a sleeping mask?

Yes, with a gel texture rather than a rich cream. Oily skin is often dehydrated underneath, and an overnight layer holds water in without adding much oil. Sleeping masks are most useful on the nights after an acid or a retinoid, when skin wants comfort rather than another active on top of it.
