Base and texture
Citric acid
The acid of lemons and other citrus fruit, today made by fermentation, used in tiny amounts to adjust how acidic a formula is.
- What it does
- Found in cleansers, toners, creams and sunscreens mainly to keep the formula at the right acidity; in exfoliating washes and toners it also works as a mild AHA.
- How often
- Usually daily in everyday skincare, with separate schedules for exfoliating pads, masks and shots; sun care needs daytime reapplication, while hair care and makeup have different timings.
