about Lotions.
Korean face lotions: the light end of moisturizer, thinner than a cream, quick to absorb and easy to layer over an essence or a serum.
A lotion is what most people reach for in summer, on oily or combination skin, and under makeup, where a heavy cream would slide. Korean routines often use one after an essence rather than instead of a cream: lotion in the morning, cream at night, or lotion on its own when the weather is warm. In the morning its light layer sits comfortably under sunscreen.
Easy places to start are innisfree's Green Tea line, ROUNDLAB's 1025 Dokdo line and Isntree's light emulsions.
questions, answered.
What is the difference between a lotion and a cream?
Texture, mostly. A lotion holds less oil, spreads thinly and sinks in within a minute, which is why it is the summer and oily skin choice and the one that sits best under makeup. A cream is thicker, holds more water in and suits dry skin and cold weather. Plenty of people own both and switch with the season.
Can I use a lotion instead of a cream?
In warm weather, or on skin that runs oily, a lotion on its own is plenty. On dry skin in winter it works better as a middle layer: essence, then lotion, then a cream over the top to hold everything in. If your skin feels tight an hour after the lotion, it is asking for the cream as well.
Where does a lotion go in the routine?
After serum and before sunscreen in the morning, or as the last step at night. In a Korean routine it usually follows an essence as a light middle layer, and on drier skin a cream goes over it. Apply it while the skin is still slightly damp so that it has water to hold on to.
