What it is
Beta hydroxy acid, the oil-soluble exfoliating acid: on a label, salicylic acid or betaine salicylate, a milder form made with betaine.
What it does
Because it mixes with oil it works inside pores, so it is used in cleansers, toners, pads and spot care for blackheads, congested pores and breakouts.
How often
Daily in many cleansers and skincare formulas, with less frequent use for some exfoliating treatments; spot patches, retinoids, shots, masks, scalp care and makeup need individual schedules.

What we recommend keeping out of the same session as BHA, and why.

  • RetinolAlternate nights

    BHA and retinol are both strong on their own and can dry out or irritate skin when layered. Keep them to different nights unless a product's own directions pair them.

  • AHAAvoid together

    One exfoliating acid per session is plenty for most skin. Choose BHA or an AHA, unless a single product is made with both.

  • KaolinAvoid together

    A clay mask and BHA both clear out oil, so together they can leave skin tight and dry. Keep them to different days.
